Students from over 80 universities took part in the BUCS judo championships last weekend.
Kane Chandler fought in the U81kg Dan grades. After winning his pool he worked his way through the knock out stage, beating some strong opposition to reach the final. His opponent was a current welsh squad member and high ranked GB player. Kane caught him with a ko soto gari early in the fight to score ippon and take the gold. Winning BUCS has qualified Kane to compete in the European universities championships taking place in Sarajevo this summer.
James Maheswaran and Alex Barns-Graham were competing in the U73kg Dan grades. Both made it through the pool in this tough group but lost in the knock-out rounds.
Lisa Kleiminger, Megan Sorensen and Rachel Moore fought in the women’s Dan categories but were up against strong opposition and despite fighting hard did not progress far into the competition.
